San Francisco,California  has a history of Music such as Jazz, Art,Authors and many different mediums of creativity. Beginning around the 1920’s -1940’s a vast amount of African- Americans migrated to the west coast post world war I and II.Many of these african americans came from the deep south and mid west great plain states. San Francisco was pegged the Harlem of the west coast during the migration of these african americans because of the creative careers and artsy energy they brought to the area. African-Americans highly populated  neighborhoods such as the Fillmore District, Western Addition, and the Bayview District. These areas were once between 40% -95% black in 1970 but sadly there are only less than 8% African- Americans still reside in san francisco. The rapid and vast decline of this community in San Francisco is quite appalling and many want to know why?

Women Projects In The Works: Julie Dash’s “Travel Notes of Geechee Girl” Doc Feature Film

bilde

Legendary Filmmaker Julie Dash has graced us with a genius & creativity story once again with her latest project ” Travel Notes Of A Geechee Girl”! Many are probably thinking what is a Geechee girl? Geechee or Gallah are black people living in the Lowcountry region of Georgia and South Carolina, who have preserved their links to Africa arguably more than any other African-American group.  Julie is a Geechee Girl herself ,as she had shown us, in her ground breaking film “Daughters of The Dust” but this latest film isn’t about Julie at all.

20150315111626-vertaBEAT

Travel Notes of A Geechee Girl  is a new documentary feature film that chronicles the extraordinary life and multi-faceted career of self-proclaimed Geechee Girl, Vertamae Smart-Grosvenor. Personally I had never heard of Vertamee but as I watched the Crowdfund campaign video (below) realization soon came on why this woman story resonated with me and is vital to be told! The film will trace her journey and madcap adventures from the Lowcountry of South Carolina  to Europe and many other places. Vertamae was a Chef,Writer ,Actress and Activist story is one of a fearless, creative and imaginative woman who has dared to cross multiple boundaries and live her life out loud!

Born April 4, 1937 in Hampton County, South Carolina, Vertamae was strongly influenced by her Gullah Geechee community. She was also determined to follow her imagination and creativity beyond the Lowcountry. At the age of 10, Vertamae Smart moved with her family to Philadelphia. Although her existence was largely sheltered, she established friendships with the future poet Larry Neal, and Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Charles H. Fuller. There, she also met the up-and coming musician, Nina Simone, who encouraged her move to Paris.  Her story is a treasure trove of adventures, encounters and experiences with some of the most influential artists, writers, actors, and musical performers of the Twentieth Century. Vertamae’s basic knowledge of food preparation and Gullah culinary traditions served her well as she would go on to cross the Atlantic multiple times, in a journey that has taken her across five major cultural movements:

Beat Literary Movement
Black Power Movement
Black Arts Movement
New Black Cinema
Food as Cultural Memory

The project must raise 55k in the next month to complete this paramount project. Travel Notes of a Geechee Girl is relevant today because it speaks to the women who want to live their lives vibrantly and for people to understand these women and even learn from them! The Story also revolves around universal themes such as Food, Travel, Writing so its relatable for really everyone.

Trailer Tuesday : Brown Ballerina (Short Film)

unnamed (1)

How many brown ballerinas have I ever seen or heard of? Why is is that brown ballerinas are slim to none?  Are the brown body types not accepted ? Are brown faces invisible in the ballet world? I sat back and thought about all the possible reasons  as I scrolled through my younger cousin’s  Ballet recital  pictures and only seen one other multi racial brown face .My cousin is a 9-year-old african american girl who has fallen in love with Ballet yet there aren’t many brown ballerinas for her to admire or at least those that have made it to an elite level in ballet. I feared that she would loose hope once she didnt see images in ballet who loked like her . A few days later I coincidently came across a young filmmakers page by the name of Chassidy Jade who had made a short film inspired by her elder sister called BROWN BALLERINA which touches on issues of race, politics and social class in the world of ballet, giving viewers a glimpse into a world that before now was inaccessible. Brown Ballerina images without a doubt is hope and inspiration for our young brown ballet dancers .Chassidy believes that viewers will be inspired by the story’s universal messages of self-love and power found in defining one’s personal path. More than a movie, BROWN BALLERINA is a movement, with a fast growing national fan base.

The film’s lead, Maryann Payne brings BROWN BALLERINA to life. With over a decade of experience, the dancer and actress received her primary training at Lulu Ballet in Los Angeles as well as Boynton Beach’s Southern Dance Theatre. Payne went on to attend Dreyfoos School of the Performing Arts in West Palm Beach as well as the New World School of the Arts in Miami Beach. Years of dedication translated into irrefutable skill, earning the ballerina a scholarship to the Alvin Ailey Summer Intensive Program. Payne has also trained at the iconic Dance Theatre of Harlem and has been a featured dancer for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines.

African and british actor makes her way to american tv in new series” AD”

home4

Chipo Chung is a Chinese-Zimbabwean actor and social activist who I stumbled upon on YouTube through her philanthropic series Live below the line as an ambassador to the peace direct organization. She took on a challenge to live on  £1 a day for 5 days to help us raise essential funds for those who most need it.This stunning yet caring  face seemed distinctly familiar but the name I could not recall .Chipo spent her early years in a war zone with her “radical” mother, who lived with her in the Mozambican refugee camp where she worked. Chipo is not your average actress she has a certain humanistic and relatable vibe to her that I think the american audience just may need to get a sighting of.

news_b968full-chipo-chung

Chipo will star in  her first  US television series A.D. which, according to commercial broadcaster NBC, explores the “exciting and inspiring events that followed the Crucifixion of Christ”. Chipo will  portray Mary Magdalene, is part of a carefully picked diverse cast for the series which has been drawn from 10 countries.

Mary Magadalene is by far one of the most popular women in the bible , after the mother of Jesus, Mary Magdalene travelled with Christ as one of his followers. She was present at Jesus’ two most important moments: the crucifixion and the resurrection.

“A.D.” premieres on Easter Sunday, 2015 and is produced by Roma Downey and Mark Burnett.

The NBC series is the producers’ follow up to the hit “Bible” series which aired on the History Channel.Picking up right where the “Bible” series left off, “A.D.” follows a harrowing yet uplifting journey through the birth of the church. The television event will detail the first ten chapters of the Book of Acts, exploring the aftermath of Christ’s death and its impact on his disciples, his mother Mary, and influential political and religious leaders of the time.

Trailer Tuesday : “Through A Lens Darkly” spark black image in America evaluation

In the wake of the media coverage of the Ferguson verdict to not indict Mike Browns Killer , Officer Darren Wilson I found a film doc to be appropriate maybe at one of the core issues . “Through a Lens Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence of a People,” a film that examines how photography shaped the identity and perceptions of blacks in America by Director Thomas Allen Harris . Flipping through the nation’s family album, and the images or lack there of positive and factual images of African-Americans seemed to be missing.

Without any doubt I agree with Harris as  he stated he believe photos help shape popular culture and perceptions of time, events and people. Perhaps the constant negative image of the black people especially men being painted constantly on tv and media has contributed to  what seems to lead to non-black races to dehumanize us. The image of the black men and women of this country is often depicted as one dimensional but that is in no way accurate. We are layered and colorful in our lives just like any other race and possibly even more.

“If we’re not looking at African-American photographers, then we’re also not looking and seeing the evolution of African-American families and how they’ve evolved over the course of the last 170 years,” Harris said. “Photography started 20 years before slavery ended, so you have this huge free community that was photographing itself or getting itself photographed. But also photography was used at that time by both abolitionists to combat this institution of slavery and by the planters to affirm a certain stereotype of the African-Americans that would legitimize their servitude.”

The film was also  apart of a series within the st.louis film festival this past weekend , “Race in America: The Black Experience.” “Through the Lens Darkly” also has created a spin-off project, “Digital Diaspora Family Reunion Roadshow.” Harris said he created the project after he was approached several times by people who said they wanted to do something creative with their family photos.’

People are invited to share family photos via social media using the hashtag #1World1Family and #DDFRtv.

Nate Parker express All lives matter in his new short film “AmeriCAN”

AMERICAN

In the past few years in America there has been a rapidly growing issue of Police brutality and Murder committed against black young men which has become quite alarming. In the wake of Trayvon martin (Sanford,Fl)and now mike brown  (Ferguson,MI) many celebrities , actors ,activist have spoken out to help make this issue of our young black males being killed is relevant because our lives do matter. Although speaking out and protesting are appropriate ways to get this country to see how affected we are by these uncalled for deaths we all know that most people do not listen. As people we are prone to learn more by doing or seeing so seemly it was quite suitable for Actor/director Nate Parker  to direct and  James Lopez producer to shoot a film that would convey this vital  issue on both end of the spectrums so that people could see and feel the effect it has on us all.All Blood Flows and All lives matter is the primary message.

Art always has a way of allowing us to see ,feel and understand major issues in life in a way words could never get across and this is true through this short film. Check out the video below as well as cameos from Lala Anthony, Affion Crocket ,Omar Benson Miller, Brian White

“The only thing worse than the ever-growing epidemic of murdered black youth in America, is the lack of empathy expressed by many of our country’s citizens. In developing this project, our goal was to create a piece of media that would offer a relatable perspective to all who watched it. It is my hope this film promotes sustainable discourse and serves as a conduit for empathy, healing and change. – Director Nate Parker/@NateParker
