On my journey in the digital film and television world I have attended and encountered great experiences but to date the 18th American Black Film Festival in nyc has been the most life changing for me ! This weekend was a world wind of working press/ social for some of the most amazingly talented film makers and actors via panels, screenings and one on one interviews.
Thursday Night kicked off the ABFF with the world premiere of “Think Like A Man 2 ” by Will Packer. Actors Kevin Hart , Terrence Howard and Ronaldi attended.
On Saturday the line up was legendary ! The Spike Lee Ya dig was a retrospective of his work and a intimate rare conversation with him regarding his life , work and feelings towards the black image and issues in film . Spike stated ” I think black people have to be in control of their own image .. We can’t just sit back and let other people define out existence”
( spike actually let me take a close up haha)
Iconic tap dancer Savion Glover have a tribute performance to Spike !
( Savion Glover and Tonya Lee )
As well on Saturday there was an exciting exhibit and press review of the new James Brown story ” Get On Up” that will be premiering in August .

My ultimate favorite moment was meeting the legendary , graceful and ridiculously Beautiful Actress/ Director of our time Phylicia Rashad and her daughter Condola Rashad in an intimate conversation! Phylicia talked about her upbringing from her artistic mother who was a writer , her iconic role as Claire and how she balanced her career / motherhood. Phylica was a pure spirit with a lot of sophisticated sass!
